At Burvant Family Dentistry, we prioritize the oral health of your entire family, including our youngest patients! One of the preventive treatments we offer is dental sealants, a simple and effective way to protect children’s teeth from cavities and decay.
What Are Dental Sealants? Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth are particularly susceptible to cavities due to their grooves and pits, which can trap food particles and bacteria. Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.
Sealants create a smooth, protective barrier that shields these vulnerable areas from plaque and decay. To place a sealant, an adhesive is first applied to the teeth. The sealant is then placed over the adhesive as a liquid painted right onto the tooth. The liquid then hardens, creating a barrier between your tooth and plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Sealants last for about ten years and can be reapplied if necessary.
